The medication increases the amount of blood flow to the male genital area. It does so primarily by suppressing the effects of an enzyme found in the genital area that reduces the amount of blood that flows into the area. By preventing this enzyme from working too quickly, men will have fewer problems with both erectile dysfunction and BPH.
It is helpful for BPH symptoms because the same enzyme that affects blood flow to the penis is also found in the bladder and prostate area.
You will generally need to take a pill once daily, depending on the dosage. Most doctors will initially prescribe a lower dosage and gradually increase it once you have begun to tolerate it. It may take four or five days to start seeing the effects but you should not try to increase the dosage on your own. Take your pill at the same time each day, at a time when you will remember to take it. You may choose to take it either with or without food.
There are some side effects that men taking this medication commonly report. Talk to your doctor if any of these side effects persist for a long period of time or if they are of concern. Muscle pains and backaches may happen 12 to 24 hours after the first dose, but seldom last for more than two days. A runny or stuffy nose, feeling flushed, indigestion or headache are also fairly common. These symptoms will usually subside within a few hours.
Notify your doctor immediately if taking this medication causes any of the rare, serious side effects. These include: decrease or loss of hearing (with or without dizziness), decrease or loss of vision, especially in men with diabetes or high blood pressure, changes in color vision or erections that last more than four hours. Long-lasting erections could have life-threatening consequences. If your erection lasts for more than four hours, you should seek medical attention right away.
The active ingredient is a coticosteroid, which acts by helping to depress the immune system. This controls the responses that lead to inflammation, pain and other troublesome symptoms.
