This drug is an antibiotic, which effectively kills and stops the spread of several different types of bacteria. The duration of time taking the drug depends on the infection. For some serious infections, the medication is administered intravenously.
Your doctor will prescribe your dose based on the type of infection you have. Depending on the infection, you might have to take this antibiotic for anywhere from three days to a few weeks or more. Always take your tablets or liquid for the amount of time prescribed to make sure that the infection is eradicated. If you stop taking your antibiotic before your prescription is finished, you may have problems with the infection coming back and being harder to treat.
Tablets can be taken with or without food, but the liquid form needs to be taken either two hours before or two hours after a meal. Regardless of whether you take Levaquin in liquid or tablet form, take any vitamins or antacids you would usually take two hours before or after the antibiotic. Otherwise, the other pills might interfere with the absorption of your antibiotic.
There are both serious and minor side-effects associated with taking this antibiotic. If you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as facial or throat swelling, a rash or difficulty breathing, stop taking it and seek immediate medical treatment. Liver damage is another serious issue to be aware of. Symptoms include dark urine, yellowing of the whites of your eyes or skin, and abdominal pain. Another less common but serious side-effect is tendon rupture, which might occur spontaneously.
Many patients experience diarrhea when taking this or other antibiotics and you should drink plenty of water. If it becomes severe, be sure to let your doctor know. Dizziness is possible and patients are advised to see how the antibiotic affects them before driving. Light sensitivity is fairly common so use sun protection when outside. A couple of other side-effects to be aware of include changes to the nerves in your fingers and toes or changes in your heartbeat. Let your doctor know if any of these side-effects do happen.
