Arthritis and hypothyroidism linked to heart disease

Individuals with inflammatory arthritis have long been known to face a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Now, new research suggests that these individuals may be even more likely to experience heart health problems if they also suffer from hypothyroidism. The findings were published in the latest issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. After reviewing the medical records of more than 175,000 individuals, researchers from the VU University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that individuals with arthritis were more likely to develop hypothyroidism. When this happened, participants faced a significantly greater risk of heart disease. The researchers wrote in their report that the findings should raise awareness of the connection between arthritis, hypothyroidism and heart disease. Furthermore, the findings should help doctors understand the importance of managing cardiovascular risk factors in patients with either of the other two conditions. Managing the symptoms of arthritis with a prescription to buy Celebrex may be one way to address the problem. At the very least, the medication may make it easier for arthritis patients to get regular exercise, which could keep their hearts functioning as normal. |
