Growth hormone may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in obese women, study finds

Growth hormone may be a powerful tool for fighting bone loss in obese women, a group at particularly high risk of developing osteoporosis, according to a new study. Pairing the medication with a prescription to buy Fosamax may have serious benefits.

A team of researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital said that excessive abdominal fat is one of the leading risk factors for bone loss. Many overweight individuals experienced weakened bone tissue.

To combat this problem, the team administered growth hormone to a group of overweight women for a period of six months. The results showed that those who received the hormone had significantly improved bone strength by the end of the trial period.

Given the fact that so many people in the U.S. are significantly overweight, the researchers said their findings could have far-reaching implications. Millions of women may be at risk for osteoporosis by virtue of their weight.

"Growth hormone is extremely important for bone health, and women with increased belly fat have weaker bones and reduced growth hormone levels," said lead researcher Miriam A. Bredella.
