Fear of side effects should not stop individuals from seeking treatment for osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can be devastating if it is allowed to progress to an advanced stage, yet many people who are at risk fail to talk to their doctor about a prescription to buy Fosamax out of fear of side effects. Experts say this concern is misplaced.

Osteoporosis can be devastating if it is allowed to progress to an advanced stage, yet many people who are at risk fail to talk to their doctor about a prescription to buy Fosamax out of fear of side effects. Experts say this concern is misplaced.

The New York Times recently reported that osteoporosis is largely underdiagnosed and undertreated because people have heard some negative news about medications used to treat the condition. This forces many individuals to put their bone health at risk.

However, the news source noted that the complications associated with untreated osteoporosis are generally far worse than any of the side effects that may be associated with treatment. The most common side effect - atypical femoral fracture - occurs in an extremely low percentage of patients. Meanwhile, Fosamax and other bisphosphonates reduce the overall risk of fracture in individuals with osteoporosis by anywhere from 30 to 50 percent.

Because there is some risk of side effects, the Food and Drug Administration has urged women who buy Fosamax and other bisphosphonates to talk to their doctor about these risks. However, there has been no indication that use of the drugs should be stopped.
