A prescription to buy Protonix or Prevacid may significantly improve the sleep of individuals who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, according to a new study published in the journal Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

The researchers said that numerous studies have linked chronic heartburn to poor sleep patterns and diminished quality of life. This makes understanding how to treat the condition particularly important.

For the study, the team analyzed results from previously conducted studies that looked at the association between the use of proton pump inhibitors, which include Protonix and Prevacid, and sleep quality.

They found strong evidence suggesting that when patients with chronic heartburn started taking proton pump inhibitors their quality of sleep improved. This led to further gains in participants' overall quality of life.

The team said the improvements observed in participants' sleep quality were likely a secondary result of reductions in acid reflux symptoms, rather than a primary effect of the medication. Either way, drugs like Protonix and Prevacid may contribute to significant gains in sleep quality for patients with chronic heartburn.
