Nasonex may be used in adults and children over the age of two. It may also be used in adults to treat nasal growths known as nasal polyps. Nasonex is produced by Sharp & Dohme Corp. a subsidiary of Merck & Co.

The active ingredient in Nasonex is mometasone furoate which belongs to the class of drugs called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are derived from natural corticosteroid hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands in the body. Corticosteroids should not be confused with anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids have many functions within the body, one of which is to control inflammatory responses. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, but when the body reacts to even innocuous substances it becomes a problem. Nasonex acts in the body to prevent the release of substances that cause inflammation. It can help to prevent the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in individuals of twelve years and older if it is started two to four weeks prior to the start of the allergy season.
